Lady Cavendish writes concerning Herbert Gladstone and the role he played in the events surrounding Irish Home Rule [Harwarden Kite affair]. She writes giving reasons for his actions hoping to exonerate him in SCC's eyes and also writes that his father [William Gladstone] "was not in the least degree to blame in the matter". She writes that she has received a "most heartbroken letter from little Margaret Ponsonby" lamenting that "it is impossible to imagine a sudden and greater loss to all those poor children than their mother will be" and wishes that she could attend the funeral but doesn't think that she could bear it. Sent from Hawarden.
