SCC writes to his father to inform him that he is going to Lismore tonight and has written to Francis Currey. He writes that "H. Chaplin" is going to stay with him and he wants to look at Boyle and Killarney. He writes that he went to Hardwick and then Sheffield where he reports they were surprised to see him as a member of the family had not visited for a while. He reports that the people there were mainly "Tories". He writes that he saw Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville but he has left town and he did not see William Ewart Gladstone. He writes that Gladstone looks unwell and is worrying but is now on his way to Balmoral via Raby. He reports that London is not very lively but there is talk of the "Emperor's health."
