Letter from Garnet Wolseley, 1st Baron to Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington

Scope and Content

Wolseley writes to SCC regarding the fall of Khartoum and the expedition in Sudan. He writes that he will send his troops to their summer quarters and keep two brigades active to fight any "adventurous parties". He informs SCC that his greatest challenge over the summer will be to keep the camels alive. He reports that the reason for their failure to take Khartoum was because of the indecisiveness of William Ewart Gladstone delaying the operation. He writes that he is responsible for the return of the troops and he writes further that morale may suffer, although the men know that they are not to blame. He informs SCC that he looks forward to the campaign in the autumn. In the postcript, he expresses dismay that Sir Charles Wilson did not proceed sooner to Khartoum when his steamers were ready which meant he also disobeyed Wolseley's orders.
