File: Simon Fund

Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers relating to the Simon Fund. The Fund was established by Ernest Simon [Lord Simon of Wythenshawe] in 1944 to encourage research in the social sciences. Simon wished to provide funds to researchers employed outside of academe to undertake projects, either at the University or elsewhere through the use of travelling scholarships. The file includes a copy of an interesting memorandum by Ernest Simon, dated 9 October 1944, outlining his aims to the Simon Fund Committee. There is also routine correspondence relating to the financial situation of the Fund, and brief accounts of some of the research projects undertaken by award-holders.
