File: Research Consultancy Service

Scope and Content

The Research Consultancy Service was established by the University in 1972 to improve the University's links with outside bodies, particularly businesses. It sought to foster University services and inventions which might be commercially valuable. The Service also provided advice to University staff on undertaking commercial consultancy work and for patent arrangements.

The file relates mainly to the administration of the service, but also deals more generally the University's relationships with businesses in the region. Topics covered include a Technology Transfer Initiative of the Manchester Universities; a proposal to establish a database of staff research interests (1981), and a 1982 canvass of members of the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee promoting the University's research work.
