File: Department of Science and Technology Policy/PREST

Scope and Content

File relating to the Department of Science and Technology Policy, which had evolved from the Department of Liberal Studies in Science. Papers include a review into the Department, which recommended that its undergraduate courses be discontinued (enacted 1989). This lead to the Department focussing more on research work, and in 1990, it was renamed Policy Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (PREST), headed by its own director. Also present are response to a UGC review into the history and philosophy of science (1987), the proposal to create an ESRC research centre (enacted as PREST), British Council courses and P Rest’s research programme in the early 1990s.

There is a discrete body of papers consisting of critical responses to the Department's proposal to drop undergraduate degrees in science and technology policy (1988).
