File: Manchester University Settlement

Scope and Content

File concerning relations between the University and the Manchester University Settlement, a social work charity which worked in deprived areas of Manchester. The Settlement traditionally enjoyed close relations with the University, and Settlement's governing body included several University members. The settlement was originally based at the Round House, Ancoats, but moved to a site in Moss Side in 1974 (a topic deal with in this file). Other subjects covered in this file include: donations and fund-raising activities, disputes over the running of the Settlement (1961, 1963), the development of youth serving training projects by the University and Settlement in light of the Albemarle and Younghusband reports, and the 1977 appeal for funds.
