File: English Language Teaching Unit

Scope and Content

The English Language Teaching Unit was established in 1971 to provide language training for the University's international students. The Unit reported to the Registrar and was later overseen by the Board for International Developments. Most of the papers in the file relate to proposals in the early 1990s to transfer the ELTU to the Faculty of Education as part of the Centre for English Language Studies. The file also refers to disputes over the role of the Direct English Language Teaching Agency (DELTA), a VUMAN spin-off company, which provided English language training on a commercial basis (mostly to the general public). ELTU staff expressed concerns about DELTA 'poaching' international students for its courses.
