Scope and Content

Papers concerning the activities of the Shrove Rag. The Rag was a student social event which raised money for local charities (mainly medical) each Shrove Tuesday. Typically, it involved a student procession through Manchester city centre, a revue, a shrove ball and a humorous magazine, The Rag Rag, instituted in 1924. The Rag was administered by the Men's Union. The papers concern all aspects of event including: details of the amount of money collected and the charities receiving funds; regulations on student behaviour during the Rag and various complaints about unruly student behaviour and the content of the Rag magazine.
