File: Appeal 1919

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the University's 1919 Appeal Fund. The Appeal had been planned in 1914, but was delayed by the War. In the post-war period, new departmental buildings, halls of residence and extra-stuff were required to deal with a major increase in student numbers. The University also planned a major expansion of postgraduate teaching, extra-mural activities, and hoped to put the College of Technology on a much sounder financial footing. The Appeal attempted to raise the sum of £500,000 to meet these needs.

The file contains general correspondence relating to requests for financial donations, events organised in connection with the Appeal, the appointment of an Appeal secretary (G.A. Marriott), and efforts to make donations to universities exempt from tax.
