The Audio-Visual Service provided a range of audio-visual and televisual for University teaching and research. The Service, originally known as the TV Service, was set up in the mid-1960s to develop new forms of "educational technology" for teaching purposes, including televised lectures. The TV/AV service was a joint service with UMIST. In 1965 a central TV studio was set up. Manchester's initiatives in this area were influenced by the Northern Universities Working Party for Co-operation in Educational Technology, and by the National Council for Educational Technology.
The file includes several informative papers on the service including reports on potential uses of the Service by various university departments (1965/1966), correspondence with the University Grants Committee, July 1966, which details the current position of the Service in a bid for extra funding, and a memorandum by the Service's Director " A note on the present position" (January 1967).
