File: Department of Chemistry

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the Department of Chemistry. Most of the material is routine administrative issues of appointments, resignations, applications for leave and travel grants, and permissions to take up industrial consultancies. There is also ongoing correspondence with grant-awarding bodies such as the D.S.I. R., the Nuffield Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and I.C.I.. Of particular interest are: a letter from Professor A.J. Birch, dated 16 January 1957, concerning the development of biochemistry at the University and a memorandum by the same from February 1958 "Notes on the present position of biochemical teaching" [in the event the University did not make an appointment to a chair of biochemistry until 1965]; a memorandum by Professor Geoffrey Gee, dated 1959, on colloid science research in the Department; and papers concerning the purchase by the University of a bust of Chaim Weizmann (a former member of the Department) by Jacob Epstein in 1956.
