Scope and Content

Property: a messuage and tenement in Timperley, formerly part of the estate of Sir William Meredith bart, purchased by Thomas Hunt of Mollington esq (in trust for Mary Countess of Stamford) from George Warburton of Timperley yeo and his mortgagee, Hannah Norman of Altrincham spinster, on 23-24 June 1768, consideration £550 to Warburton and £250 to Norman.

Documents include: lease and counterpart lease for 3 lives from Sir William Meredith of Oldfield Hall [in Altrincham] bart (1665-1752) and his son, Amos Meredith of Henbury esq, to George Warburton of Timperley yeo, 1730 (EGR14/1/12/1-2); conveyance by lease and release from George Johnson of Manchester co. Lancs esq to George Warburton and his trustee, William Renshaw of Altrincham broker, with assignment from Charles White to John Warburton in trust for George Warburton to attend the fee, 1761 (/3-5); mortgage by George Warburton to Hannah Norman, with a bond, 1762 (/6-7); deed between George Warburton and Hannah Norman to secure more money, 1766 (/8); conveyance by lease and release from George Warburton and William Renshaw to Thomas Hunt, with discharge of mortgage by assignment to Sir Henry Mainwaring bart in trust to attend the fee, 1768 (/9-11).

[Thomas Hunt was one of the two trustees appointed under the will of George Booth (1675-1758), 2nd Earl of Warrington, to hold the estates on behalf of his daughter Mary, Countess of Stamford. Although not explicitly stated, Hunt purchased the present property in trust for her: see EGR3/7/1/5/4 among the papers of Lady Stamford.]
