Scope and Content

The ledgers record receipts of rent from cottage tenants in Bowdon parish. Rents were payable weekly or monthly. In each six-monthly accounting period holdings are arranged by township: Carrington, Bowdon, Bollington, Altrincham and Dunham Massey. Within each township tenants are listed alphabetically. Cottages are not individually identified.

Rent payments are recorded in columns arranged across the double page, one column for each week in the half-year period. Columns are provided for the rental folio number; the day of the month when the rent is due; the tenant's name; the rent per week or month; arrears due; the rent due; payments of rent each week or month; the total rent received during the half-year; allowances; arrears carried forward; and remarks. Remarks include notes of vacancies, properties in hand, rent increases, the demolition of properties, the installation of mains water etc. At the end of every month the total amount collected was transferred to the cash book (EGR14/25 above), and the folio number of the entry in the cash book is recorded. At the end of each six-month accounting period there is a note of cottages in hand, debts written off and arrears carried forward.

From January 1901 tenants in Dunham Massey township are differentiated by locality and hamlet: Dunham Town, Woodhouses, Sawpit Street, Henshall Lane, Sinderland Green, Sinderland, Lowerhouses, Poorhouses, Oldfield, Knutsford Road, and Sinderland Lane. From July 1914 the number of each property in the estate terrier is recorded, and cottages within each township or hamlet are arranged in numerical order. From January 1922 net rents, rates and gross rents (net rents plus rates) are individually recorded.

EGR14/32/1-3 are entitled "CHESHIRE ESTATES COTTAGE RENTAL", EGR14/32/4-6 "COTTAGE RENTAL", stamped in gilt on red morocco lettering pieces applied to the spines and upper covers.

[Cottage rents up to June 1897 are recorded in the small rent ledgers, EGR14/31 above.]
