The series comprises bundles, wallets and envelopes of papers relating to particular projects, such as sewerage schemes, the construction of railways and the Manchester Ship Canal, and the building of a bridge over the River Mersey, which directly affected the Cheshire Estates of the Earls of Stamford and the Stamford Trustees. Land was required for these schemes and the promoters, whether private companies or local authorities, often acquired powers of compulsory purchase through Acts of Parliament. The series also contains papers relating to other property transactions, such as the enclosure and sale of Hale Moss and the conveyance of Carrington Moss to Manchester Corporation, and to works on the estate, including a specification for the rebuilding of a farm and quotations from suppliers of building materials and other products. These papers did not constitute part of the alphabetical arrangement found in EGR14/15 above.
Like EGR14/15, the series bears witness to the increasing complexity of estate administration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and to the strengthening of external influences upon the Stamford Estates.
