Scope and Content

The series contains fourteen draft half-yearly summaries of receipts and expenditure on the Cheshire Estates held by the trustees appointed under the will of the 7th Earl of Stamford. Receipts comprise reserved and chief rents; rack rents; tithes; occasional receipts; and special receipts (timber, gardens, park ley, road-making, game, and capital account). Expenditure comprises: rents, tithes etc.; charities and subscriptions; estate expenses; game; garden expenses; Hall expenses; miscellaneous expenses; payments to Ashton & Stalybridge Bank; park expenses; permanent improvements; rates and taxes; estate repairs; [repairs and upkeep of] river banks; insurance; annuities in respect of lifeholds; and valuations.

For each category of receipt and expenditure only the total figure is given. Written against each item of receipt and expenditure is the page number of the corresponding entry in the cash abstracts (EGR14/26 above), which provide much fuller information. On 30 January 1905 the ownership of the Cheshire Estates was transferred from the Stamford Trustees to William Grey (1850-1910), 9th Earl of Stamford. The draft statement for July to December 1904 (EGR14/42/13) was extended to cover the additional period from 1 to 29 January 1905. The final statement is for the Trustees' residual accounts only.
