Scope and Content

The volumes contain annual accounts of rectorial and vicarial tithe rent charges collected in Bowdon parish. In each volume there are separate accounts for each of the following townships and hamlets: Bowdon, Altrincham, Dunham Town [to. Dunham Massey], Oldfield [to. Dunham Massey], Sinderland [to. Dunham Massey], Dunham Woodhouses [to. Dunham Massey], Ashton upon Mersey, Agden, Bollington, Baguley, Timperley, Hale, Ashley, Partington and Carrington. The order of townships and hamlets sometimes varies.

All persons and bodies within each township or hamlet who were liable to the charge are listed alphabetically. Arrears from the previous year, the tithe rent charge for the current year, corn averages, allowances, and arrears carried forward are recorded in tabular format, with notes in certain cases. The figures for the previous year's arrears, the rent charge and corn averages were entered prior to the rent day; other figures appear to have been entered during the course of the rent-collecting session. From 1868 onwards column headings are pre-printed on every page. Each volume concludes with a summary of accounts for all locations.

In 1885 a larger format of account book was introduced, with columns provided on each opening for: the name of the tenant; arrears of tithe rent; the year's rent charge; the corn average; allowances; the date when paid; cash received for arrears; the date when paid; cash received for current rent; arrears; and remarks.

From 1891 onwards each volume is divided into two sections: i) rectorial tithes due to the Stamford Trustees in Bowdon parish; ii) vicarial tithes paid by the Stamford Trustees on behalf of their tenants. Vicarial tithes comprise: tithes in Bowdon, Altrincham, Dunham Massey, Carrington and Bollington payable to the vicar of Bowdon, tithes in Dunham Massey payable to the vicar of Dunham Massey, tithes in Carrington payable to the sequestrators of the benefice of Flixton [co. Lancs], tithes in Bollington (Bowdon parish) and Bollington (Rostherne parish) payable to the vicar of Bollington, and tithes in Bollington (Rostherne parish) payable to the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford.

From 1895 onwards columns are provided for: the name of the tenant; arrears brought forward; the year's rent charge as per the apportionment; corn averages; allowances; the date when received; cash received; arrears carried forward; and remarks. From 1895 the rectorial tithes in Bowdon, Altrincham, Dunham Massey, Carrington, Hale and Timperley, formerly payable to the Stamford Trustees, were payable to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.

Headings in some of the accounts record the date, time and location (usually a public house) at which the rents were collected. Rent days invariably fell in late October or November. Enclosed within EGR14/35/1 are draft rent charge schedules for 1854 for Altrincham, Dunham Massey and Timperley. Enclosed within EGR14/35/31 are two collector's schedules for the collection and delivery of tithe payments from each township, November 1881 and November 1884. Enclosed within EGR14/35/32 are a schedule of tithe rent charges in Carrington, and a list of dates for the collection of tithes, 1885. Enclosed within EGR14/35/35 are schedules of tithes in Carrington and an apportionment of tithes upon land sold to the Manchester Ship Canal Company, 1889.

EGR14/35/1-14 are entitled "Rent Charge of Bowdon Parish", written in ink on paper labels pasted to the upper covers; EGR14/35/15-31 are entitled "RENT CHARGE OF BOWDON PARISH", printed on paper labels pasted to the upper covers; EGR14/35/32-46 are entitled "BOWDON PARISH TITHE RENT CHARGE", stamped in gilt on the upper covers.
