Scope and Content

The bundle contains printed particulars and conditions of sale issued by Rowland Price of Stourbridge, solicitor for the 7th Earl of Stamford as vendor, for the sale by auction of the Wilmslow estate on 21-23 September 1853. The sale comprised 3000 statute acres of land, mills, several inns and public houses, 200 cottages, houses and shops, and chief rents.

The conditions of sale incorporate memoranda of agreement for the purchase of individual lots, with the date of agreement, the name of the purchaser, the purchase price and the amount of deposit entered by hand, and signed by the purchaser. The conditions of sale are generally endorsed with the name of the purchaser and the lot number(s). They were arranged in approximate alphabetical order of purchasers.

The bundle also contains two draft conveyances from George Harry Grey (1827-83), 7th Earl of Stamford, to Samuel Henshall of Lindow in Wilmslow yeo, 1854 (/37), and William Wood of Wilmslow yeo, 1855 (/62).

Printed, with MS additions.
