Scope and Content

The piece is in 3 movements and is inscribed Paque 1986 [Easter 1986].

The original score - of which this is a photocopy - is handwritten by Burgess.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1986, Burgess met Philippe Loli in Monaco and engaged him to give his wife, Liana, guitar lessons. Burgess subsequently learnt of the Aïghetta Quartet, an ensemble founded in Monte Carlo in 1979 by Loli along with Andrew-Michel Berthoux, Alexandre Del Pa, and François Szönyi and he offered to compose a work for the ensemble. Loli accepted and Burgess completed his first guitar quartet, the Quatour (No. 1) pour Guitares, on Easter Sunday 1986.

The premiere performance of Burgess's Quatour No. 1 (by the Aïghetta Quartet) took place in January 1987 at the Academie Rainier III de Monaco.
