The MND Show was commissioned in c.1971 by the Fromm Music Foundation and the Creative Artists Public Service Program and was scored (for chamber singers, large choir and instrumental ensemble) by Stanley Silverman, with Shakespeare's original text adapted by Burgess. It premiered in Boston at the New England Conservatory in 1971 and ranges in style from early Romantic to gospel, incorporating excerpts from Mendelssohn's incidental music sung in the classical scat style of the Swingle Singers.
