First published in 1970, Burgess's richly illustrated speculative biography follows Shakespeare from his beginnings in Stratford to his success in the London theatre and, eventually, to his affluent semi-retirement.
The biography was initially drafted under the title "Will's World: The Life and Times of Gulielmus Shaksper".
