Literary papers and music written or adapted by Burgess, or by Burgess in collaboration with another author, including papers relating to translations of Burgess's works

Scope and Content

The collection includes drafts of novels, screenplays, poems, short-stories, articles, lectures, film treatments, lyrics, and musical compositions by Burgess (or by Burgess in collaboration with another author). It also contains corrected proofs of works (in preparation for publication) and research notes.

Occasionally, works written solely by other authors have been included in this collection, such as a copy of a film script by Terry Southern and Michael Cooper for A Clockwork Orange, and outlines for a ten-episode drama about the life of Shakespeare by David Butler. Such records are included within this collection as they are believed to have formed a key part of Burgess's own work on the given project.

Arrangement

Records within this collection have been divided into series according to the original (or adapted) work to which they relate; for example, Any Old Iron, Beard's Roman Women, A Clockwork Orange, and A Shorter Finnegans Wake. Music composed by Burgess that does not form part of his work on identifiable film, stage, radio or television projects is catalogued separately as "Musical compositions."
