Devil of a State is a 1961 novel by Burgess. The construction of a new mosque in the fictional East African caliphate of Dunia is the backdrop to a tale of postcolonial conflict and marital unhappiness. Burgess draws on some of the characters and situations he witnessed while living in Brunei, although the story is heavily fictionalised. Selected by the Book Society as its novel of the month in 1961.
