In c.1968, Burgess was commissioned by Michael Holden to write a screenplay about Edward of Woodstock, the eldest son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, also known as the Black Prince.
Burgess also considered writing a novel about the Black Prince, with a proposed title of "Black Prince and Fair Maid".
