Published in 1976 and illustrated by Fulvio Testa, The Long Trip to Teatime is a novel (ostensibly for children) about a schoolboy named Edgar who slips through a tiny hole in his desk and undergoes a series of adventures - many associated with "E" and derived by Burgess from encyclopaedia entries beginning with that letter - before returning to his classroom in time for tea and cake. Although Burgess stops short of writing nonsense literature as such, he nevertheless experiments in the novel with several techniques commonly used in the genre in order to subvert ordinary language conventions and logical reasoning, and is apparently inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871).
