Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In the mid-1970s, Burgess accepted a commission from Little, Brown and Company to write a book commemorating George Orwell's novel, 1984. First published in 1978, Burgess's 1985 combines two responses to Orwell's novel in one book and incorporates diverse literary style and genres. The first is a critical commentary, and the second is dystopian novella, which depicts a future in which trade unions have overtaken society.
