Journal of John Marriott, June - July 1898, describing his visit in the John Williams to the out stations of the Samoan mission. He was accompanied on the ship by workmen travelling to Fanufuti to continue Professor David's research work in drilling coral. He visited the islands of Nukulaelae, Fanufuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau and Nanumea, in the Ellice group [Tuvalu]; Onatoa, Peru [Beru], Nukunau, Tamana and Arorae in the Gilbert group [Kiribati] and Atafu, Fakaofo and Olsenga [Olsega] in the Tokelau group. At each place he received reports from the native pastors and examined the schools.
