Copy of the journal of John Williams and Charles Barff, Tahiti, 1829-1830

Scope and Content

Typescript copy of journal of John Williams of 1830, describing his voyage with Charles Barff from Tahiti to the Hervey Islands [Cook Islands], Savage Island [Niue], Tonga, Samoa and Austral Islands where the eight native teachers travelling with them were with him were to remain. Visited Aaron Buzacott and Charles Pitman at Rarotonga, also Mr Turner and Mr Cross - Methodist missionaries at Tongataboo [Tongatabu]. Islands where he landed include Mangaia, Rarotonga, Atiu, Aitutake [Aitutaki Atoll], Savage Island, Tongataboo, Lefuga [Lifuka?], Savaii, Aburima, Manono, Upolu and Rurutu. The journal give describtions of the appearance of the islands and the customs of their inhabitants. Attached to the journal is section of film and prints from the film of some pages of a brief log which was included with the original journal. The original manuscript is held in the Mitchell Library, Sydney.
