Scope and Content

Journal of John Marriott, September - November 1887, describing his voyage in the John Williams to the out stations of the Samoan mission. He visited the islands of Olsenga [Olsega], Fakaofo and Atafu in the Tokelau group, Nukulaelae, Fanufuti, Nukufetau, Nui and Nuitao in the Ellice group [Tuvalu], and Arorae, Nukunau, Peru [Beru], Onotoa and Tamana in the Gilbert group [Kiribati]. At each station he received reports from the native teachers and visited the churches and schools and answered the teachers questions. New teachers were brought to some islands, other were taken back to Samoa. Statistics of the stations at each island are also recorded, and the journal contains a table listing the book sales at each place.
