Scope and Content

Journal of George Turner, May - July 1878, describing his visit to stations of the Samoa mission in the Tokelau, Ellice [Tuvalu] and Gilbert Islands [Kiribati]. At each station he received the report of the native pastor, and gathered statistics. If time allowed he also took part in services, examined the children, and held meetings with the people about various other matters. Islands visited include Fakaofo and Atafu in the Tokelau group, Nukulaelae, Funafuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau, Nui, Nanomanga and Nuitao in the Ellice Islands; and Tamana, Arorae, Nikunau, Peru [Beru] and Onoatoa in the Gilbert group. Attached to the journal is a covering letter from Turner's brother-in-law, who was commissioned to send the journal on to the Missionary Society. The journal has been edited in pencil.
