Scope and Content

Letter written on the reverse of a letter received by Josephine Butler from Horace Marshall 24 Sep 1897

To say she is enclosing an article from a French paper on Lady H Somerset; she would like it sent to her [Lady HS] 'it is severely true'. Had an important Committee at Lausanne last Friday and she has written to Mr Stuart to get in train preparation for a Congress in London next Jul. Hopes to return in Nov.

Administrative / Biographical History

[18 Oct 1897]

In JB's letter to Miss Forsaith she says 'I ought to have let you have it some weeks ago'. This would date the letter about the middle of Oct. Further clue to date: when she is relating plans for having a Congress in London the following year in Jul, she says '9 months is not at all too long for preparation for such an event'

[The Congress was held 12-15 Jul 1898]

Letter is written from Switzerland: 'we had an important committee at Lausanne on Friday ... when I return ... I want a cttee called especially about the Congress'

15 Oct was a Friday - therefore date of this letter could be 17 or 18 Oct.

'... please tell me to whom and how far you have circulated my letter to the Toronto WWCTU'

For note on WWCTU at Toronto see letter of 3 Jun 1897.
