Written from Berachah, 39 Scarisbrick New Road, Southport.

Their sailing date, 9 or 10 Jan, time to send any further information that might help them. Their address in India will be c/o Mr WC Madge, 5 Old Court House Rd, Calcutta. Speaks of the circular aiming at providing female assistants [in hospitals] as they saw this thing coming fully four years ago. They had no opinion of the training received by these girls (Eurasians who seemed to have no strength of character)

WC Madge was author of an able pamphlet entitled: 'The Contagious Diseases in India: their complete failure proved from authentic returns'.

'We thought ... of our fears and premonitions, during our work in India in 1892, as to how easily the 'Lady Dufferin' half trained, 'certificated' medical women could be turned into this line ... '
