Indenture and contract between the vicars of the choir and David de Cadzow, precentor of the church of Glasgow whereby the vicars are to say a daily Mass for the said David at St Servants altar, in exchange of an annual payment of 7 pounds Scots.

Scope and Content

Secretum seal of the city of Glasgow, in mediocre condition. Pendant on a tag.

The seal represents St. Kentigern wearing episcopal vestments and a mitre. His right hand is raised in benediction and he holds a crozier in his left hand. To the left is a salmon hauriant with a ring in its mouth and to the left a bell surmounted in chief of a bird. The legend is between raised borders: S'SECRETVM CAPITVLI GLASGVENSIS.

The document was written on parchment by the notary John of Hawick and it is bearing his authentification mark. It is written in a neat cursive hand with some occasional secretary features. The first letter is ornamented.

Blackhouse charters catalogue description: 'Mutuall Contract and Indenture betwixt the viccars of the Queer and Mr. David de Cadyho precentor of the Church of Glasgow whereby the viccars are obleidged to say daily Mass for the said Mr. David at St. Servants altar etc. and the said Mr. David upon the oyr part is obleidged to pay to the viccars 7 pounds Scots yearly dated 18 June 1446'.
