Charter by Queen Mary I granting to the provosts, the bailies, council, and and community of the city of Glasgow, for the support of their own ministers and the erection and endowment of hospitals, all the lands, tenements, churches, chapels, dues, profits, and pertinents belonging to any chapels, altarages, prebends in whatever churches, chapels or colleges in the said city, together with all the mansions, annual rents and dues which formerly belonged to the Dominican or Franciscan friars within the said city, and with all the annual rents from any lands or houses in Glasgow due to any chapels, altarages or churches in Scotland, or the rents and duties exigible from the provosts and bailies of the burgh. By this charter, all former rights to the subject are revoked and the several subjects are united in one body to be called the Queen's foundation of the Ministry and Hospital of Glasgow, and one sasine is to be sufficient for all.

Scope and Content

The seal is completely defaced and there does not appear to be a recorded impression of the seal of this Andrew Hay.

The document is written on parchment in a bastard hand, mixing an upright secreatry hand and traditional elements. The first letters and letters on the first line are ornamented.

Blackhouse charters catalogue description: 'Charter by Qween Mary to the provest Ballies and Community of the City of Glasgow of all the Lands Tenements Churches Chapells Caswalities and profits and pertinents of the same belonging to any and whatsomeever Chapell Alterage prebendary in whatever Kirk Chapell or Colledge within the said City with the Mansions yearly rents and Caswalities whatsomeever which formerly belonged to the Dominicalls or Franciscans within the said City with all the lands and houses within the said City and Liberties thereof And all annual rents upliftable out of whatsomeever houses or Lands within the said city gifted to whatsomeever Chapells Altergages or Kirks within the Kingdome And with all annual rents and other rents And duties which might be bestoued by the said provest and baillies of the Comon good to any oyr church without the said city with provision that the said provest and baillies should be obleidged to bear the burden of the mentinance of Ministers readers and oyr church burdens and to uphold the Kirks and Hospitalls By this Charter all former rights to the Subject are revoked And it is declared that the said revocation shall be also affectuall as if the parties In whose persones the right was had been called The severall subjects Disponed are also thereby united in one body to be called the Qweens foundation of the Ministry and Hospitalls of Glasgow And one Seasine is to be suffice for all Which Charter is Dated 16 March 1566'.
