Charter by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochaw granting to the Black Friars of Glasgow an annual rent of 20 shillings out of his lands of Inchieluscrusk, with a warranty clause that provides that said Sir Duncan and his heirs are to pay 1 merk Scots to the fabric of the Cathedral of St Moloak in Argyll and half a merk to the fabric of the collegial church of St Maud in Cowal each time they fail to pay the aforesaid 20 shillings.

Scope and Content

There two seals attached to the charter, of which one has been lost, the other, the seal of Duncan Campbell of Lochawe, is fragmentary. Pendant on tags.

The seal of Duncan Campbell of Lochaw represents a shield bearing arms: gyronny of eight (Gules and Ermine). Crest: upon a helmet with rose: a boar's head with a long neck couped (Or) and on each side a branche of roses. Supporters: two lions sejant gardant (Gules) armed and langued (Azure). The legend is between carved and beaded borders: S' DUNCANI CAMBALLE DNI DE LOCHOWA.

The document written on parchment in a pre-secretary hand with prominent cursive elements. Typical secretary hand features are: the p written in one continuous action of the pen and looking like an x, the lef-ward curve below h, the open e. No ornamentation.

Blackhouse charters catalogue description: 'Charter by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochaw in favour of the predicant friers of Glasgow of 20 shillings Scots yearly out of his Lands of Inchielucrusk Lying in Cowall at two termes by which the said Sir Duncan obleidged himself and his airs to pay a merk Scots To the fabrick of the Cathedrall of St. Moloak in Argyle and half a merk for the fabrick of the Collegiat kirk of St. Maud in Cowall as often as they should be deficient in the yearly payment of the forsaid 20 shillings Scots by and attour payment of the said 20 shillings dated 27 Septer, 1451'.
