Scope and Content

Book file relating to In black and white: the graphics of Charles Tomlinson, with an introduction by Octavio Paz (Cheadle: Carcanet New Press, 1976). The file contains only typescript and photocopy typescript material relating to the text of the volume, not the graphics. Includes: title page, contents pages and acknowledgements; the three essays by Tomlinson which appeared in the volume, 'Poet as Painter', 'To Begin: Notes on Graphics' and 'Image and Chance: from a Notebook'; incomplete page proofs of Octavio Paz's introduction to the book, and two further typescript pages of the introduction annotated and revised by Schmidt [who translated Paz's introduction from the original Spanish]; and an annotated photocopy of Paz's original typescript introduction in Spanish. The file also includes: a letter to Schmidt from Tomlinson dated 30 June 1975 relating to a forthcoming film about him, his completion of the Royal Society of Literature lecture, and Paz's request for a copy of Schmidt's translation of his introduction; a covering letter to Schmidt from Tomlinson dated 19 January 1975, with which he enclosed the photocopy of Paz's introductory text in Spanish; and an apparently unrelated postcard sent from Tomlinson to the critic and editor F.W. Bateson (dated 3 January [1957]) relating to the poetry of E[lizabeth] Bishop.
