Scope and Content

Book file relating to The poetic art, a translation of Horace's Ars poetica from the Latin by C.H. Sisson (Cheadle: Carcanet Press, 1975), for which Val Warner was copy-editor. The book is represented by the manuscript only, which is in the form of an original typescript introduction and notes, and photocopy of the translation itself taken from Poetry Nation II, where it originally appeared. Warner has marked the manuscript up for printing in pencil and made some minor editorial changes to Sisson's introduction. Sisson has supplied a typescript blurb and notes (presumably relating to corrections to be made to proofs). The file also includes further typescript material added by Warner, as follows: printer's instructions; stylistic queries on the typescript; other queries on the typescript which have answers provided in Sisson's hand; queries arising from the proofs; and preliminary pages for the book. There is also a letter from Schmidt to Sisson dated 13 May 1975 informing him that the proofs are being sent out to him (no proofs survive in the book file).

Archivist's sheet numbering is in the top left-hand corner to distinguish it from Warner's original foliation of the manuscript.
