Scope and Content

Book file containing manuscript and proofs of the anthology Love, labour and liberty: the eighteenth-century Scottish lyric, ed. Thomas Crawford (Cheadle: Carcanet Press, 1976), published in co-operation with the Universities Committee on Scottish Literature and the Scottish Arts Council. The volume was printed by W. and J. Mackay, by photo-litho. This appears to have been a new method of printing by Mackays; previous books were probably letterpress and therefore went straight to page proofs, whereas lithography involved producing galleys first. The printers made a large number of errors in printing this volume, which necessitated more stages of proofing than usual. Notes and letters included in the book file indicate that the book was copy-edited by Carole Reeves, and Val Warner may also have been involved in proof-reading.
