Manuscript

Scope and Content

Joan Hart's manuscript, which takes the form of a typed introduction and linking passages, with Campion's poems photocopied from the first editions of his works. The first draft of Hart's introduction to the volume was submitted to Schmidt in May 1973 (see letter at CPA/2/1/40/10). In September, Schmidt responded with detailed comments on the introduction (in letter CPA/2/1/40/16), in response to which Hart redrafted it and submitted a revised version in November (letter CPA/2/1/40/22); she subsequently submitted a further revised version in March 1974 (letter CPA/2/1/40/27), which is presumably the version included here. In addition, letter CPA/2/1/40/34 includes as an enclosure two typescript paragraphs intended for possible inclusion at the beginning and end of the introduction, which were not ultimately used. The introduction includes some corrections and annotations by Hart herself and possibly also some by Schmidt. Some editing has also been carried out on Campion's poems, indicating poems to be omitted, normalising punctuation, and instructing on layout and page breaks.
