MS 350: Account Book of Henry Handley Norris

Scope and Content

Together with MSS 349 & 351-355 this forms a set of six 19th century account books, and a bank pass book, belonging to Henry Handley Norris (1771-1850, Church of England clergyman and leader of the High Church faction known as the Hackney Phalanx). This volume covers the years 1821-1823, but contains evidence of the reuse of one of his father's (or grandfather's) account books from the 1760s. Purchased using the Leishman fund in 1981 (Colvin's supplement to Coxe).

  • 1. Fols 1v-33r: Norris, Henry Handley. Account book recording income and expenditure for 1821-1823. English. Single 19th c. hand in black ink. Accounts with ca. 38-49 lines to a page. Double-entered. Divided into five unequal vertical columns with pencil rules. [Fols 33v-36v blank].
  • 2. Fols 1r & preceding stubs: Remains of an earlier set of accounts in a an 18th century hand with dates in the 1760s, but still bearing the name of Henry Handley Norris (presumably Senior, his father? or grandfather?).
