Scope and Content

17th century notebook of extracts or quotations from classical authors arranged by topic, possibly made by "Buckeridge", possible suggestions being either Arthur (1653-1706, matriculated St John's 1670) or Nicholas (1649-1727, matriculated St John's 1666), although several people of that name attended St John's over the 17th and 18th centuries. No-one of the other name attached to the item, "Baynbrigg" appears to have attended St John's during either century.

1. Fols 1r-72v: Buckeridge? Extracts from classical authors arranged by topic. Latin. Several? 17th/18th c. hands in black ink, the main one being a mixed hand, 17th? c.. Written in long lines/single column with ca. 20 lines to a page. Versos often blank. Fols 65v-71v bear an index of topics arranged alphabetically in 3 double-ruled columns on each verso (rectos blank), a single letter at the head of each column done in black ink in a 'gothic' style with ornate flourishes. Minor latin inscription on fly-leaf iir and rear pastedown. Evidence of more text on a stub after text block.
