MS 289: Vicesimus Knox, On Ridicule

Scope and Content

18th century notebook containing fair copy of an essay 'On Ridicule' by Vicesimus Knox (1752-1821, matriculated St John's in 1771, Headmaster of Tonbridge School and conduct writer). ODNB states that until the age of 20 Knox signed himself Nock or Knock, as here.

  • 1. Fols 1r-9v: Knox, Vicesimus, On ridicule . English. Single 18th c. hand in black ink. Fair copy. Written in long lines with ca. 27-28 lines to a page. "[Fol. 1 blank, caption fol. 2r] On Ridicule. [text] There is not a Subject which has been both more applauded & condemn'd by different Writers ... which We should not have observ'd without the Help of such ill-natur'd Monitors. [fol. 10 blank.]"
