      Chiefly paper mounted on paper. Dimensions of inserted items vary but those leaves integral to the volume are ca. 330 x 200 mm. Text area: varies considerably. Fol. i + 99 leaves fols 90-99 being loose inserts. (Later pencil foliation throughout on top right of rectos dated 1994 on inside of rear cover: i + 89 + 90-99 leaves. Also an integral foliation on most leaves beginning on fol. 1r and ending on 87r: 79 leaves). Binding: 18th c? strengthened marbled paper. White paper label with “Musæum Pointerianum | Vol. 4th.” in black ink pasted on front cover, and ink inscription “Vol. | IIII” directly onto front cover. Both in Pointer’s hand. Binding dimensions: 337 x 213 mm.

Scope and Content

A miscellaneous collection of autographical, linguistic and palaeographic curiosities formed by the antiquary John Pointer (1668-1754). Kept together with MS 254 which consists of additions to this collection. The printed items, and the Turkish and Hebrew manuscript items, have been catalogued more fully elsewhere, the former on the Oxford University on-line catalogue (SOLO), and the latter in Savage-Smith's Descriptive Catalogue of Oriental Manuscripts at St John's College, Oxford (Oxford University Press, 2005).

Fols 1-99: Pointer, John, Musæum Pointerianum , Vol. 4. (from front cover). Title also inside front cover, "MUSÆUM POINTERIANUM | Vol. 4th | Being | A Collection of several Papers of | Antiquity & Curiosity." Captions in English, but items often in other languages. Single 18th c. hand in black ink (Pointer's own).

1) Fol. 1r: Indulgence printed by Wynknyn de Worde, 1526. STC (2nd ed.), 14077c.121B; ESTC, S93142. For full details see SOLO. Pointer's caption: "Pope Clement 7ths Pardon of sins, granted to Mrs Margaret Brokes, of Knaresborough in Yorkshire, & her Heirs, for 500 years. Granted A.D. 1526. in quantum claves Ecclesiae [si?] extendunt." Blank for name filled in in 16th c. secretary hand. Granted by Brother Oswald, Vicar General & Provincial of the Trinitarian Order in England. Decorated with three painted Maltese style crosses in pink and green, originally red and blue?, the colours of the Trinitarian cross. [fol. 1v blank.]

2) Fols 2r-3v: "A transcription of the afore-going Popes Pardon" in Pointer's hand. Latin. With note at bottom of fol. 3v: "Given by Dr Brooks of All Souls Coll."

3) Fol. 4r: Symbolum Apostolicum printed in a southern Indian language, possibly Malayalam-Tamil? 17th c. For full details see SOLO. Caption: "The Apostles Creed in ye Malabar Language."

4) Fols 4v-5v: "Toe-writing." Notes in Pointer's hand, with an engraved portrait of Johannes Valerius, 18th c? pasted below. For full details see SOLO. Also a pasted slip with a sample of examples of Valerius'? toe-writing in English & Latin (63 x 145 mm).

5) Fols 6-7: Turkish letter from the Kaymakam Pasha (Öküz Mehmed Pasha, d. 1620) to James I. Dated 1607/8. For full details see Savage-Smith (2005), entry no. 37, pp. [107]-110. Pointer's caption on 6r: "A Letter from the Sophi of Persia to K. Ch. I. written upon Paper made of ye Bark of Trees."

6) Fols 8-9: A letter in an early Cyrillic script, from Tsar Mikhail I Romanov to Charles I, dated 4th March 1631 (Coxe supplement). Russian? 543 x 412 mm (text area: 360 x 225 mm) folded to fit volume. Decorated with lavish foliate gilt part border and initial, surmounted by a crown. Addressed on verso? Two inscriptions by Pointer on fol. 8r: 1. "The Czar of Muscovy's Letter"; 2. (inverted) "A Letter from the Czar of Muscovy to K. James 2d written in the Slavonian Language."

7) Fol. 10r: "Mouth-writing." With a pasted slip (117 x 107 mm) bearing an example in English.

8) Fols 10v-11r: "Stump-writing." Various pasted items relating to the German artist, magician and illustrator, Matthias or "Matthew" Buchinger (d. 1739), including: 2 printed advertisements for his appearances, both dated later in ink, one (for an appearance in Oxford) to 1730 (see SOLO), the other to 1717 (see SOLO); a printed elegy on Buchinger's (misreported) death, possibly cut from a newspaper, ESTC, T182474 (see SOLO); and three examples of his calligraphic work. Of these latter, two are standard samples with an ornate headpiece incorporating the letters ABC and their mirror image, and the text "This was Written by | [inverted] Matthew Buchinger | born Without | [mirror writing] Hand or Feet ...". One (98 x 153 mm) was done at Worcester on "Octobr 2nd 1724", the other (61 x 126 mm) at Oxford in 1727. The third example (52 x 46 mm) is a micrographic version of the Lord's Prayer in English arranged in a spiral and dated 1717, with an ornate square, foliate border. Pointer's caption: "This German Monster was married & had 8 children all Perfect & Compleat. He wrote by holding his pen between ye 2 stumps of his Arms ...". [fol. 11v blank.]

9) Fol. 12r: A 17th c. receipt (87 x 86 mm) bearing the name John Langley and the date April 3rd 1662. English. Pointer's caption: "It was a Custom formerly for the Scholars of Brazen-nose to have Almond, Raisins & Figgs for dinner on Good-Friday, as you may see by this Receipt."

10) Fols 12v-13r: Printed copy of Papal Bull of Pope Leo X dated 1516. STC (2nd ed.), 14077c.102; ESTC, S93117. See SOLO. Pointer's caption: "A Bull of Pope Leo ye 10th – granted A.D. 1516 – for ye space of 10 years." [fols 13v blank.]

11) Fols 14-15: Engraving of a mosaic produced for the antiquary (and one of Pointer's rivals) Thomas Hearne by Michael Burghers in 1712. See SOLO. Pointer's caption: "An antique ROMAN PAVEMENT, 35 foot in length x 20 in breadth ... found in ye parish of Stansfield near Woodstock, Oxford shire, A.D. 1711/12, proved to have been a Pavement of a Subaltern Officers [Tent?] belonging to Allectus, 1400 year ago!"

12) Fol. 16: Engraving of "The Clog or Staffordshire Perpetuall Almanack", produced ca. 1670? See SOLO.

13) Fols 17-19: Pointer's notes on the above: "The meaning of this Staffordshire Perpetual Almanac."

14) Fols 20-23: Materials on the "Painted Prince" Giolo or Jeoly, of Gilolo, (b. ca. 1662). These include an engraved illustrated advert for his exhibition, ca. 1692, (see SOLO), a letterpress advert, ca. 1692, (Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), P3484; ESTC, R222721, see SOLO), and Pointer's notes describing his part in the removal of Jeoly's skin on his death, and a further exhibition of tattoed "Indian Princes" in 1719.

15) Fol. 24: Printed sheet "A description and explanation of a neat pocket-piece, or medal ... wherein are described ... tables and lines whereby to find the days of the week, and day of the month for ever ...". 1717. ESTC, T12223. See SOLO.

16) Fol. 25: Printed sheet: "A perpetuall ephemeris table showing the day or/of the month for ever." 1644? See SOLO.

17) Fols 26-27: Engraving of Charles I surrounded by other worthies, by Joseph Nutting. 1648. See SOLO.

18) Fol. 28: Printed sheet: "The four Indian kings speech to Her Majesty ["Q. Ann" inserted by Pointer], London, April 20. 1710." (ESTC, T5943). See SOLO.

19) Fols 29-30: Autograph letter from John Martin (fl. 1730, of Merton College), at Sandwich, to Pointer, dated October 1st, 1730. (187 x 290 mm, folded). English. Addressed to Pointer at Merton College on fol. 29r, with Pointer's caption, "A Letter from an old friend of mine proving that a fragment of the Walls of TROY, that he sent me is genuine" on fol. 29v, and the main body of the letter, on fol. 30, describing Martin's receipt of the fragment from a person who had visited Troy, and remembering their acquaintance at Merton 30 years previously. With fragment of a black wax armorial seal affixed.

20) Fol. 31r: Transcription in Pointer's hand with caption: "A Copy of some of Sr Tho. Fairfax's Letter to Prince Rupert \at Bristol/ in ye time of ye Civil War." [fol. 31v blank.]

  • ii. Fol. 33r. Pointer's caption: "An order sign'd by Oliver Cromwell's own hand & directed to the Ambassador of the King of Spain concerning some Prize ships", dated 24th Apr. 1653, with Cromwell's signature. Appoints Walter Walker and John Thurloe (1616-1668) to confer with the Spanish Ambassador. English. 217 x 138 mm, pasted into volume, and obviously trimmed as Pointer has had to supply the ends of sentences on the supporting leaf.

  • vii. Fol. 37r: Printed warrant (209 x 162 mm) signed by Queen Anne. See SOLO. With the blanks filled to demand "One Brace of ... Bucks" to be delivered to the Duke of Shrewsbury as Chamberlain of the Royal Household by the ranger of Wychwood Forest. Dated 10th July, 1714, at Kensington.

Pointer's account covers births at Sturminster Newton, Dorset (1736); Comarin, Hungary (with a pen sketch, brought to Oxford in 1708); St Domingo, West Indies (1533); Blois, France (1724); Swansea, Wales (1678).

28) Fols 58-59: Materials relating to the case of the suicide of Richard Martin, a "scout" at University College, Oxford in February 24th 1712. Fol. 58r: Pointer's account of the case. [fol. 58v blank.] Fol. 59: Martin's suicide note explaining his drowning as a result of maternal antipathy and unemployment (tipped in, 271 x 188 mm).

Tipped in paper label (69 x 115 mm), fragment of an English translation of "ye Icon Basilice written by Mr Thomason a Latin Schoolmaster in Cheshire, who finisht a Book & presented it to ye Queen who gave him 50 [pounds?]. 2. "Mr Parry's Writing." Pasted paper label (44 x 126 mm), opening fragment of an English verse addressed to a lady. [fol. 78v blank.]

38) Fol. 79r: 3 examples of the Lord's Prayer in English in micrographic hand-writing. Pasted slips. 1. (17 x 17 mm) Dated 1685. 2. (30 x 26 mm). 3. (41 x 40 mm) Done in a spiral. Pointer's caption: "The Lord's Prayer wrot in this compass by a Gentleman of 55 years of age without the help of a Glass."

A pasted slip (186 x 130 mm) of red paper with a verse in English in gold paint? containing the name of Colonel Rooke, and signed by Joshua Bowes in green? ink.

45) Fol. 84v: "Verses on Mr Secretary Harley's [i.e. Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, 1661-1724] being stab'd & like to have been kill'd by a villain [the Marquis de Guiscard?], written on Paper dipt in his Blood." A pasted slip (82 x 185 mm) of red stained paper, with verse in black ink.

46) Fol. 85: Engraving, Ornatissimo doctissimoq[ue] viro Joanni Woodwardo, Medicinæ Doctoris, ejusdem Facultatis in Collegio Grehamensi Professori, & Societatis Regalis Socio, ectypum istud clypei antiqui in Museo ejus conservati, observantiæ et grati animi ergo, dicat consecratque Tho. Hearne . 1720s. See SOLO. Two captions in Pointer's hand: 1 (at head of leaf) "The Figure of an Ancient Shield in ye possession of Dr Woodward"; 2. (at bottom of leaf) "The Original is in the Possession of [space] Wilkinson MD. of Woodford in Essex."

47) Fol. 86r: 1.) A pasted slip (153 x 117 mm) bearing a sketch labelled "The Figure of an old Roman Key, found at the Devises in Wilts. in a Sepulchral Urn, wch was 5 ½ foot in Compass, an Ell in Height, & containd 10 Gallons, & was full of Ashes" in Pointer's hand. 2.) A pasted slip (73 x 166 mm) bearing a sketch with a caption "The Figure of Alexander-the-Great's Horn" in Pointer's hand above it, as well as various labels & notes in Latin, Greek and English on the label itself.

48) Fol. 86v: 1.) A pasted slip (83 x 131 mm) bearing a bill in a secretary hand, with Pointer's caption, "A Bill drawn upon by one Sam. Williamson a Taylor, upon Mr Poynter when Gent. Comr of Brazennose Coll. Oxon, in the year 1616", with a transcription by Pointer beneath. 2.) A printed receipt (65 x 90 mm), dated October 20th 1676, recording the payment of five shillings by Pointer for the half yearly duty on the 5 hearths in his house, received by John Lyons. See SOLO. With blanks filled out in a 17th c. hand.

49) Fol. 87r: Transcription of a Latin prayer, and an English translation in Pointer's hand. With caption, "The Copy of an Old Pater noster, or rather Papa noster, being directed to the Pope & not to God, [erased], & is the Reverse of the LORD'S PRAYER, & more properly a Curse than a Prayer. It was found immur'd in a Dissolv'd Priory in Warwickshire made by Mr Wm Townsend." A Latin satire on the Pater noster, followed by an English translation, with a parallel English transcription of the Lord's Prayer. [fol. 87v blank.]

50) Fol. 88: "Index." Listing in Pointer's hand of the main items in sequence, followed by a listing of the autographs of the more celebrated figures, mainly in sequence.

Outline of the contents of a book on medals, with caption "Medals. Knowledge of Medals. Written Originally by a Nobleman of France." (188 x 305 mm folded as bifolium to 188 x 152 mm). Fols 93-94. A list of medals, with caption "Mr Pointer's Medals." (182 x 306 mm folded as bifolium to 188 x 153 mm).

53) Fol. 95: Printed vellum sheet (folded) bearing a Latin lettre de tonsure for Maurice Cumman, signed by François Bosquet (1605-1676), Bishop of Montpellier, with the blanks filled in a 17th c. hand, and dated December 18th 1666. See SOLO.
