Book file containing manuscript and proofs of Edgell Rickword's Literature in society: essays and opinions (II), 1931-1978, edited by Alan Young (Manchester: Carcanet New Press, 1978). The book was copy-edited by Robert Wells, the proofs were set by Woodspring Press of Bridgwater, and the book was printed by Billings. A letter from Wells in the Rickword correspondence file at CPA/2/2/98 implies that the book was copy-edited hurriedly, and batches of manuscript sent to Woodspring separately; similarly proofs were returned for correction in batches, which may explain why the manuscript and proofs preserved here are not all complete.

Scope and Content
Arrangement
The printing arrangements described above resulted in a book file which was somewhat disorganized, with many separate bundles of incomplete page proofs. Here the archivist has attempted to order these into something resembling a chronological order, showing the progress of the correcting and resetting process.
