Michael Schmidt, Ten English poets

Scope and Content

File containing the manuscript of the anthology Ten English poets, edited by Michael Schmidt (Manchester: Carcanet New Press, 1976). The volume was intended as a selection of new poetic voices and a sampler of Carcanet's future poetry list, and contained work by Robert Wells, Neil Powell, Gareth Reeves, Alistair Elliot, Grevel Lindop, Michael Vince, Keith Chandler, Clive Wilmer, William Bedford and Charles Boyle. The book was typeset in-house at Carcanet and printed using offset lithography by Billing and Sons. The manuscript was probably typeset by Schmidt himself and therefore bears very little annotation. It is in the form of ribbon, carbon and photocopy typescripts supplied by authors, as well as one or two poems photocopied from earlier publications. The content of the anthology differs slightly here from the published version, and there are a number of additional poems which were not ultimately selected for inclusion. The section of Grevel Lindop's work is missing entirely; all the other poets are represented but with the following differences from the final published version: in Wells's section, the poem 'Waterfall' follows 'The Changeling', and 'At the Pathside' is not included; there is an additional poem by Vince called 'At End of Day', before 'The Ark'; there is an extra poem by Chandler at the end of his section entitled 'Raleigh's Last Fling'; an additional poem by Wilmer called 'The Mariner's Wife' is included before 'Saxon Buckle'; two additional poems, by Bedford are included after 'Childhood', called 'Childhood in Lincolnshire' and 'The Mermaid'; and there is one extra poem by Boyle called 'Explorer', following 'Back'. Schmidt has supplied typescript preliminaries and an annotated typescript of his introduction. The file also includes: typescript biographical notes on some of the poets (as well as two passport-sized photographs of William Bedford); and letters or notes to Schmidt from Wells, Chandler, Wilmer and Bedford.
