However, the main focus of the correspondence of the failed mission to Kabul and the retreat to Jalalabad (a detailed account is provided in Mss Eur F88/121/1), with comments made particularly by Lord Elphinstone on the reasonings behind the events and the death of high-commanding army officers and diplomats like Major General William Elphinstone and Sir William Hay Macnaughten. Three letters, Mss Eur F88/121/13, Mss Eur F88/121/45 and Mss Eur F88/121/47, are in Italian; one, Mss Eur F88/121/46, is in French; and part of a letter, Mss Eur F88/121/7, is in Persian (items in Persian are awaiting further investigation to determine their exact language)
