Topics of correspondence include the suggestion of publishing a new edition of Mountstuart Elphinstone's 'Account of Kabul' (which Elphinstone agrees to) and the situation of the former Raja of Satara who was accused of treasonable behaviour towards the British Government. Colonel Lodwick and other British servants were removed from their posts because they had declared him to be innocent of such behaviour (see John Milne's letters). Also includes requests for recommendation and patronage; a request from the Oriental Club to have his portrait painted; and speculation over whether John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone, had been recalled from his post in Madras in order to attend Queen Victoria's coronation
