Topics of correspondence include requests for patronage and recommendation; Mountstuart Elphinstone's refusal of the post of Governor General of India, after the resignation of Lord Bentinck (his explanation for his refusal can be seen in Mss Eur F88/89/16-Mss Eur F88/89/18). Also includes letters on Elphinstone's lands in Biggar, including suggestions for improvements from the tenants by, for example, altering the water course (Mss Eur F88/89/26) and extending the church (Mss Eur F88/89/35); and a plot of land in Biggar for sale which Elphinstone is interested in purchasing (Mss Eur F88/89/30-33 and Mss Eur F88/89/38-Mss Eur F88/89/39).
