Scope and Content

Topics of correspondence include the conclusion of the William Henderson affair, general news about friends and family, and their concerns for Mountstuart Elphinstone's health. Includes a letter from Lord Elphinstone with news of the Kabul mission and Sir William Hay Macnaugten's murder, complete with copy letters and narratives (Mss Eur F88/122/1). Also has a letter from Sir James Graham offering Elphinstone a place on the commission newly established to undertake an investigation of the operation of existing Poor Laws in Scotland (Mss Eur F88/122/64) which he turns it down (Mss Eur F88/122/65). One letter, Mss Eur F88/122/103 is in Persian script (items in Persian are awaiting further investigation to determine their exact language)
