Topics of correspondence include requests for recommendation and benevolence; the news of Mountstuart Elphinstone's sister Mrs Keith Erskine's illness (Mss Eur F88/98/3); and Lord Elphinstone's acceptance of the post as Governor of Madras and the staff he appoints to go with him, for example, Walter Elliot (Mss Eur F88/98/15). Also includes a letter from Professor Arthur Bedford Orlebar who writes of his fears of having to retire his post soon due to the effect of the Indian climate on his health and the success (or lack of) of the Elphinstone College (Mss Eur F88/98/25)
